Meal Replacement Q & A

What is meal replacement?

Meal replacement means using a prepackaged product instead of regular meals. At Excelsis Health, Dr. Cain prescribes a proven liquid meal replacement program, Optifast from Nestlé Health Science, to help you lose weight while learning a new lifestyle.

How does the meal replacement program work?

The Optifast program lasts 18 weeks. You'll move through three phases, including:

Active weight loss

During the active weight loss phase, you'll drink a meal replacement shake for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, along with one to two additional shakes at the recommended times.

The shakes contain at least 24 essential vitamins and minerals, so they're nutritionally complete. The active weight loss phase lasts for 16 weeks.

Transition

During the transition phase of your program, you'll start to eat solid foods again. Dr. Cain gives you customized nutritional advice to help you make the right food choices during this time.

Maintenance

The maintenance phase happens after you've achieved your weight loss goal. During this time, you'll continue to eat healthily and exercise, using the principles you've learned in the earlier phases of the program.

After the Optifast program, you'll have all the tools you need to maintain a healthy weight long-term.

When might I need a meal replacement program?

You might need a meal replacement program like Optifast if you struggle to lose weight and have health problems like type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol (collectively, metabolic syndrome).

Dr. Cain may recommend Optifast as part of your weight loss, metabolic care, and nutritional management. Excelsis Health patients lose an average of 15% of their extra weight.

After completing Optifast, patients lower their blood sugar, reduce cholesterol by an average of 15%, and lower blood pressure by 10-15%.

You may need Optifast meal replacements if you’re planning bariatric surgery. This meal replacement program can help you establish better health leading up to your procedure. It also enables you to get into the routine of using a nutritionally complete shake as food, something you’ll typically do following the surgery as well.

If you’re looking for an obesity management or weight loss program designed for easy use and fast success, schedule a consultation with Excelsis Health online or by phone to learn more about Optifast.
